Alternative ports for visits to Amsterdam are Ijmuiden, 18 miles west of the city, or Rotterdam, which is more than an hour away by coach. In 2019 the city introduced a tourist tax on cruise ship passengers which, at the time, led to lines including MSC Cruises, P&O Cruises and Cunard replacing or canceling calls at Amsterdam. The city has population around 1 million (urban 1,35 million, metro over 2,43 million).

When out and about, look for the ubiquitous lion symbol (IMG ATM's). The Dutch capital will stop cruise ships from docking in the city center as part of a campaign to curb pollution and reduce the flow of tourists. The Amsterdam cruise terminal has a 600m long dock (depth 10m) on the northern side and has the size to host large cruise ships of up to 340m in length. "As the port has publicly stated, cruise ships have not been banned from Amsterdam," the statement read.

What happens when someone dies on a cruise ship?

what is a morgue on a cruise ship

They would have backup plans in place that likely wouldn’t involve using food storage spaces. It’s not surprising that many people die on cruise ships every year, as the elderly demographic make up a large percentage of passengers. When you think some of the largest cruise ships have a capacity of 4000 to 6000 passengers, many of them in their older years, it’s no surprise there are deaths. In such cases, alternative arrangements had to be made to store the bodies, as reported by Ross A. Klein, a sociologist and author specializing in the cruise ship industry.

Cooperation With Authorities

Her mother, Kathy Lee Gifford, who once served as Carnival's spokesperson, encouraged Cassidy to embrace this role, emphasizing the significance of this honor. The Gifford family is thrilled about Cassidy becoming the Godmother of the new ship, seeing it as a testament to their enduring connection with Carnival. As the christening ceremony approaches, Cassidy can't wait to see this amazing ship and carry on her family's tradition with pride and excitement. In 2005, Cassidy Gifford made her acting debut, marking the beginning of a career that would see her grace both the big screen and television shows. Her talent and dedication have led her to be a recognizable face in various films and TV series.

Who Is the Godmother of the Carnival Dream?

what is a morgue on a cruise ship

A 2018 Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) report found that 50% of cruise ship passengers were over the age of 50, and almost a third of that 50% were over 70 years old. For storage, there are stainless steel refrigerated compartments or pull-out cold drawers to contain bodies. Basic embalming tools, cleaning supplies, body bags, and personal protective equipment are also kept for handling deceased persons. The morgue facilities are located in an area that is inaccessible to passengers, ensuring their privacy and respecting their grief. The capacity of these facilities is regulated by international procedures and regulations, ensuring that they meet strict standards for sanitation and safety.

Investigation by Cruise Line

The cruise line may also offer assistance with any early disembarkation or repatriation. In most cases, the body will be removed from the cruise ship in the next major port of call. This will depend on factors like local regulations, the vacation itinerary, and the ship and cruise line’s home country.

One option for families who wish to scatter their loved one’s ashes at sea is to book a cruise and bring a biodegradable urn. Carnival Cruise Lines offers around 200 complimentary ash scattering ceremonies each year, and the Guest Services team carries out the ceremony. The captain provides the coordinates of the ceremony location, ensuring that the ashes are scattered in a meaningful and respectful manner.

what is a morgue on a cruise ship

The number of deaths is likely to have have risen in recent years simply because there are now more people cruising than ever. In 2019, for example, there were 29.7 million cruise passengers, according to Clia. If the death was from natural causes or the situation has been investigated the body will be disembarked at the nearest port.

By prioritizing safety protocols, the Dominican Republic aims to offer tourists a vacation where they can enjoy themselves and return home with peace of mind. Although my act wasn’t great at the time, I managed to overcome the sickness and entertain the audience. Battling seasickness on the cruise was a challenging experience, but it allowed me to connect with fellow passengers who were kind and supportive. As Cassidy prepares to take on this responsibility, her future expectations are undoubtedly bright. With her family legacy deeply intertwined with Carnival Cruise Line, she's poised to continue making waves in the entertainment and travel industry. This role opens doors to new opportunities, collaborations, and experiences that will further solidify her place within the Carnival community.

I’m sure it isn’t protocol to keep bodies in the ice cream freezer but without any other options, I could see it happening. It's unlikely that this type of morbid thinking is top-of-mind for anyone excited about an upcoming cruise vacation. These are the questions that pop into your head while you're in the shower getting ready for work, chatting over drinks with friends or lying awake in bed at night pondering the meaning of life. The morgue on a cruise ship is typically quite small, often about the size of a large closet or small room. It is not designed to hold more than one or two bodies at a time, as a larger morgue would take up valuable space needed for passenger amenities. As morbid as it may seem, death is a reality that can occur anywhere, even on a cruise ship.

The ship’s staff immediately notifies all passengers traveling with the same reservation as the deceased guest and alerts their emergency contact. When vacationing on a cruise ship, the last thing on most people’s minds is the possibility of death. Yet, with cruises often being the holiday choice for the older demographic, it’s estimated that around 200 people pass away annually on cruise vacations. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the latter two can have requirements that necessitate the off-loading of anyone who's died, or preclude the line from being able to offload a body. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requires that any ship that calls or homeports at a U.S port must immediately report any deaths onboard.

Additionally, port authorities on any port the ship visits have the right to require examination of a dead body and off-loading the body. The morgue is usually found on the lowest ship deck, away from guests. It is a refrigerated room made of stainless steel with individual compartments. Generally, the bigger the ship, the more shelves are found in the morgue. "Our crew is proactive," says a spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line. The line has procedures in place for dealing with these situations, including employees specifically trained to provide emotional and logistical support to grieving loved ones.

There are no exemptions to the COVID-19 testing requirements for travelers to the Dominican Republic. However, alternative testing options are available, such as free rapid antigen testing or paid PCR testing, administered by health professionals at hotels. I don’t need a negative COVID-19 test before traveling to the Dominican Republic. However, travelers from the United Kingdom do need to present a negative test taken within 72 hours of travel. These COVID-19 testing protocols are part of the entry requirements for travelers coming from the UK.

Some cruise lines have volunteer clergy onboard who may assist in supporting the family of and friends of the deceased. Elderly passengers make up a large portion of the cruise ship demographic. The death of a passenger will need reporting to the relevant local authorities.

The design of modern cruise ships and stringent safety protocols significantly minimize such incidents, ensuring the safety and security of passengers while aboard. The most common cause of death on cruise ships is natural, primarily due to heart attacks (source). The prevalence of heart attacks as a leading cause of death isn’t surprising, given the higher average age of cruise passengers. The stress of travel, excitement, and perhaps the physical activity involved in participating in various ship activities can exacerbate these conditions.

Unfortunately, the cost will fall on the passenger’s family or travel companions, rather than the cruise line. Some travel insurance policies cover disembarkation and repatriation in the event of death on board, so travelers should be insured before going on their vacation. With this age data, and given that an average cruise ship carries between 3,000 and 5,000 passengers, the chances of someone dying on board are not remote. In fact, it is estimated that around 200 people die on cruise ships each year. Here, we explore a few of the more common steps taken by cruise lines in the unfortunate event of a passenger death.

Doubtful Sound Cruises Fiordland National Park Kayak Cruises

doubtful sound cruise

Dramatic views and incredible natural beauty await you in New Zealand’s second-longest fjord, Doubtful Sound. As weather shapes this landscape, it’ll also shape your experience of this pristine place. Fiordland’s weather is what gives the region its unique character. Rainfall is what makes Fiordland a land of lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls and fiords. Visitors should always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall during their stay. It is recommended to bring sensible clothing for cool and wet weather to fully appreciate your stay.

Other Activities to do While You’re in Te Anau

Tim and I were hopeful that we would also get to see the sun in Doubtful Sound. Start or finish your trip in a spectacular way by adding a scenic helicopter flight out of Doubtful Sound right from the boat. Our friendly personable crew will do all they can to ensure your experience is the best we can make it. Most of the rain falls on the seaward side of the mountains. Located deep in the heart of Fiordland, and almost inaccessible to humans, Doubtful Sound is within a temperate rainforest and home to a largely undisturbed wildlife.

Fiordland Expeditions Difference

As a Queenstown local, I’ve been lucky enough to do several Doubtful Sound cruises. From my experience, I consider this tour the best of the bunch, which is why I’ve written this whole guide about it! Keep reading to learn why it’s my top choice and how to book it. Since Doubtful Sound is so remote, only a handful of tours can take you there. Staying in Te Anau is a wise choice because this is the closest city with decent accommodations and tour options. These tours handle all your transport to Doubtful Sound and include a nature cruise once there.

What are the departure and arrival times for a Doubtful Sound cruise?

This isolation makes the fiord a very special, private place, a place only those in the know get to see. Whilst care is taken, prices are subject to change without notice. The Southern Secret has five comfortable and warm ensuite guest cabins. The Master Suite cabin (sleeps 1-2), Double cabins (sleeps 1-2) and the Double/Twin cabin (sleeps 1-4). All have private bathrooms with toilet and shower facilities. Access the spacious viewing decks outdoors or enjoy the views from the saloon.

Even with my bout of seasickness and the rainy weather on day one, it was one of the highlights of our trip and I would highly recommend it for any New Zealand itinerary. From there, our boat headed back towards the Wilmot Pass and our journey onward to Manapouri. I stayed out on the deck enjoying the best parts of a Doubtful Sound cruise – the views. After yesterday’s grey skies and seasickness, I was so excited to have this peaceful and beautiful time on the water with the sun shining and a light breeze.

Everything is managed with efficiency and care from start to finish. We were looked after by skipper Jason who shared his enthusiasm for the natural world with us all ... He also taught us how to fish and we caught dinner - blue cod and Jock Stuart - expertly cooked by Kirsten. SCUBA Diving Should you wish to Dive, we can offer the use of the MV Southern Secret as a dive platform only (a tender is also available).

Experience the spectacular, remote wilderness of Doubtful Sound on our guided day trip. Journey across Lake Manapouri, over the breathtaking Wilmot Pass and into the heart of Fiordland National Park. Your getaway starts with a short cruise across Lake Manapouri, then a coach across Wilmot Pass through dense rainforest where your crew and the Fiordland Navigator boat await.

One of the finest examples of a fiord environment

They had warned us the night before that it was going to be a fairly early wake up, so we weren’t surprised to hear the captain’s voice booming over the speaker system at 7 am. Following dinner, Colin and I walked over to the observation deck where our ship’s nature guide was leading a talk. He shared photos, maps and videos explaining where we had travelled on the fiord, where we were going the next day, the history of the area and, of course, the local wildlife. Your cruise may also include round trip transportation to Manapouri from Queenstown or Te Anau if you’ve opted for the coach transfer. Otherwise, you can drive your own rental car to Manapouri, park for free and join the tour from there.

One of my favorites is Browne Falls, which is 619 meters (2,030 ft) tall. For budget travelers, you can’t beat staying at the Te Anau Lakeview Kiwi Holiday Park & Motels. It’s perfect for those on a road trip in a campervan or motorhome and has budget rooms available. They offer self-contained studios, bungalows, and private rooms with views of Lake Te Anau and the mountains. Some units come with private cooking facilities and balconies. Rooms are clean, showers are hot, and the whole property feels like a giant park.

doubtful sound cruise

However, you’re responsible for buying any alcoholic drinks at the cash bar. And if you need transportation from Queenstown or Te Anau, you’ll be charged an extra fee. The overnight cruise also includes a 3-course buffet dinner, and there’s a cash bar on board if you want to purchase alcoholic drinks to go with it. Overnight, you’ll stay in a private cabin with a shared bathroom, and you’ll be treated to a continental breakfast in the morning. When you arrive in Doubtful Sound, you’ll board the overnight cruise. I love the fact that this boat has a comfortable, modern interior, but on the outside, it looks very old-fashioned and charming.

This was such a wonderful experience from start to finish so, if you get a chance to do it, we would thoroughly recommend it. The trip organisation worked like clockwork and every one of the staff we met, from drivers to the crew, were great. Thanks especially to our principal driver, Paulie (it isn’t really fair to single any one person out but he was just so nice and helpful).

To get to Doubtful Sound visitors first take a launch trip across Lake Manapouri and drive over Wilmot Pass. The only time I felt seasick on our Doubtful Sound cruise was when we went out to the Tasman Sea. We experienced this on our Milford Sound cruise too but the sea wasn’t as rough that day. On our Doubtful Sound cruise, the captain took us out to the sea for 5-10 minutes; I hear it’s usually 30 minutes in better weather.

If you have the time and cash to spare, and really want to experience as much of the fiord as possible, I would definitely recommend the two night cruise. If time and budget are lacking, the day cruise can give you a little taste of Doubtful Sound. For most people, visiting Doubtful Sound is the kind of thing you only do once, so you want to make sure you choose the right cruise!

Doubtful Sound’s allure isn’t confined to its shimmering waters. Step off the boat, and you’re welcomed into a world of dense rainforests, rugged New Zealand mountains, and tales whispered by the wind. This land, forged by glaciers and cradled by nature, beckons you to explore its depths. There aren’t many Doubtful Sound cruises available in general, and this is one of the only tours with 24-hour cancellation when you book through Viator.

With the constantly growing popularity of cruising vacations among New Zealanders, the "World Cruises" round-trip from Auckland is starting to appear on the market. Getting There By Public TransitThere are options available for those looking to take public transportation to the Auckland cruise terminals. Located directly across the street from Queens Wharf is the Britomart Transport Centre, which is used for bus and train services. The crown jewel of Auckland’s skyline is the Sky Tower, and its observation deck restaurant is a fine dining experience like no other.

Known as the "City of Sails," it boasts a stunning harbor dotted with countless sailboats and yachts. Auckland offers a unique blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty, with its iconic skyline dominated by the towering Sky Tower. The city's most iconic landmark is the Sky Tower, a massive needle-type attraction built in 1996, which is the tallest manmade structure in the country. But as the latest construction boom shows, there are significant changes to come as the city skyline continues to evolve. Work is now underway to extend the waterfront boundary and build a NZ$35 million (AUD$33 million) tree-lined public space in the ferry basin between Princes Wharf and Queens Wharf.

Cruise ships can either dock at the Queens Wharf or at the Princess Wharf. Both are located right next to each other on the famous Auckland waterfront and in front of the downtown area. In a nation where stunning scenery is a given, Auckland doesn’t fail to deliver. A watery wonderland on New Zealand’s North Island, with yachts meandering through its harbours and adjoining Hauraki Gulf, it’s little wonder Auckland is known as the ‘City of Sails’. If you are an embarking passenger in which case, please ensure you have your passport and ticketing information with you to gain entry to the terminal.

If you decide to do the zipline, you should know that from the ferry drop-off point is another 30-minute drive to the location where a safety briefing will be provided. Traveling time from the Auckland port to Waitomo Caves is at least 2h 45 minutes each way. On a guided walking tour, you can learn about the cave system from a very knowledgeable guide and see the spectacular rock formations.

The Downtown Ferry terminal is located on Auckland’s waterfront, right next to Auckland Cruise Ship Terminal. Another great way to save money on dining out is by taking advantage of happy hour specials at restaurants. Many restaurants offer discounted drinks and appetizers during certain hours of the day, making it an excellent opportunity to sample local cuisine without breaking the bank. If you’re planning a trip to New Zealand, it’s important to know that the official currency is the New Zealand dollar (NZD). This is widely accepted throughout the country, including at the Auckland cruise port. The NZD is divided into 100 cents and comes in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes.

Very few places in the world boast glowworm caves and New Zealand is one of them! The island was created 600 years ago by volcano eruptions and is the youngest of the approximately 50 volcanoes of the Auckland volcanic field. Rangitoto Island is home to the world’s largest pohutukawa forest and the most popular getaway from the hustle and bustle of Auckland’s city center.

This exhibit is complete with a Māori Marae (meeting house), waka (wooden carved canoe) and many other Māori artefacts. It’s also the place to learn about New Zealand’s part in World War I & II and the country’s natural history. Referred to by its original inhabitants as Tamaki Makaurau, which means "Tamaki, desired by many", the harbour town has become more of a desirable place to visit in the past decade or so. It’s easy to get around the inner city and surrounding suburbs on Auckland’s modern public bus network. A bus to locations in the central city will cost approximately NZ$2, while bus trips to the suburbs will be approximately NZ$3-5.

If you’re an avid explorer, the 182-meter volcanic peak, One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie), should be top of your list. Climbing to the summit’s peak (marked by an obelisk) rewards your efforts with breathtaking views of Auckland and its harbors. If you’re craving the tastes of South India, traditional Kerala cuisine is Ela’s core focus. Dinner mains include prawn curry, vegetarian dosa, lamb shank curry, and more. The restaurant also boasts a variety of vegetarian and gluten-free options. It’s part of a dining precinct with a wide range of cuisine offerings.

The cruise terminal provides a free wi-fi connection for you to use. You will also notice the city has several wi-fi hotspots where you can connect to the internet as well. Alternatively a lot of bars and restaurants provide a complimentary connection if you use their facilities.

You will find many suggested bicycle maps all over town and also in the near area of the cruise terminal. The city is fairly flat and the road offer many biking lanes and all that. If you are looking into doing something active this might just be the thing to do. Auckland Zoo is another must-visit attraction that showcases New Zealand’s unique wildlife. The zoo has over 135 species of animals from around the world, including native species like kiwis, tuataras, and kakapos.
